Montego Bay, Jamaica, is a gorgeous Caribbean destination, perfect for squeezing a luxury vacation into a busy schedule. The tranquil beaches, breathtaking waterfalls; there is so much to explore if you want to get active. There are so many beautiful spots to relax if you need a reset.
From personalized island tours to gourmet dining, Montego Bay has something for all travelers. In this guide, you’ll discover luxury resorts, insider tips and curated experiences that will elevate your tropical getaway.
Travel Tips for Montego Bay: Transportation, Tipping Etiquette & Best Time to Go
The best time to vacation in Jamaica is between December and April, during the dry season. Expect crowds, especially during major holidays. For a less crowded trip, plan for November or May to early June. Just know, the stormy season will get worse from July through early fall.
You’ll need a passport for your trip to Jamaica. You’ll also be required to fill out a standard immigration and customs form online before your trip.
Flights to Montego Bay
From the U.S., you can find direct flights to the Sangster International Airport (MBJ) in Montego Bay from most major cities through American Airlines, United, Delta, Spirit, and Southwest, among others.
During peak season, between December and April, flights can cost between $500 - $850. During lower traffic seasons, flights can drop to $350 - $600. Prices spike during holidays and spring break.
✈️ Insider Tip: Set flight alerts for Montego Bay 5 - 6 months ahead, and book when prices dip, which is usually on Tuesdays or Wednesdays 2 - 3 months before your trip. That way, you’ll get the lowest fare before seats fill up.
Safety in Montego Bay
Like many other Caribbean destinations or large cities, Jamaica can be dangerous. The U.S. State Department lists Jamaica at a 2 out of 4 advisory level for crime and limited medical services. While some tourist traps and resorts can provide safe havens, they can also make you a target for theft. I recommend leaving unnecessary valuables at home and using the hotel’s provided safe if needed.
Getting around Montego Bay
Most of the resorts in Montego Bay offer transportation to and from the MBJ airport when you book your stay. Some hotels offer a free ride, while others charge a bit extra. That extra fee is worth it for less stress after your flight and a smooth ride to your hotel.
Tipping Culture in Jamaica
I recommend exchanging some cash when you arrive. The exchange rate hovers around $160 Jamaican Dollars to $1 US Dollar. $250 - $300 USD should be enough for a weeklong stay, but you may need more if you plan to spend a significant amount of time away from your resort.
While some all-inclusive resorts advertise against it, discreet tipping is welcome, especially for housekeeping, butlers and spa staff. If you opt for butler service at your resort, tipping between $20 - $30 USD per day (or $3,200 – $4,000 Jamaican dollars) is common, depending on the quality of the service. For housekeeping, between $2 - $5 USD ($320 – $800 JMD) per night is good.
Tipping is often expected at smaller, boutique hotels. Tour guides, drivers and some restaurants may add service charges; if not, a standard 18% -20% tip will do.
All-inclusive Resorts in Montego Bay
There is no lack of beautiful, luxury resorts along the coast of Montego Bay; the hardest part is picking just one for your stay.
The Riu Hotel in Montego Bay is a sprawling, adults-only beachfront resort. With 5 pools, a waterpark, 4 restaurants, 3 bars and ample activities, this resort is perfect for a relaxing couples getaway or an exciting solo trip. The restaurants at the Riu include a range of cuisines, like Asian, Italian, an American buffet and a Jamaican BBQ spot.
Prices for a standard room at the Riu can range from $360 to $540 per night, depending on the time that you go. A minimum 3-night stay is required. The hotel is about 10 minutes from the airport, and offers transportation to and from MBJ Airport for an extra $32.
Sandals Montego Bay is another divine resort with 12 restaurants, 6 bars, 7 pools and endless entertainment — including water sports and amusing activities. In my experience, Sandals cultivates a relaxing vibe with above-and-beyond service. They also make the best drinks of any resort I’ve been to! The Sandals in Montego Bay is conveniently located about 5 minutes from the airport and offers a shuttle service that is already included in the overall price.
During peak season, prices at Sandals Montego Bay start at $1,200 - $1,700 per night, meaning you can expect to pay an average of $3,500 for a 3-night stay. Sandals resorts offer three types of rooms: Luxury, which tends to be more affordable; Club level rooms, which are moderately priced; and Butler level rooms, which include a butler who can order your meals, plan your excursion, and cater to your needs during your stay. Butler-level rooms are often $500 - $700 more than the other options. For a more private and intimate experience, check out the swim-up rooms, which provide pool access from your patio.
The Half Moon Resort is an expansive luxury resort that offers spacious villas and beachfront rooms. The hotel is family-friendly and provides everything you need for a laid-back escape or an island adventure, including an award-winning, 18-hole championship golf course, an equestrian center for horseback riding (and swimming) experiences, and a lavish spa surrounded by fragrant greenery. Half Moon also offers 6 phenomenal restaurants, like the signature Sugar Mill, which serves Jamaican plates with a modern twist.
You can choose from several dining plans to suit your needs. They range in price from $38 for a breakfast plan to $260 for a premium plan that includes 3 meals a day plus drink credits. The hotel is about 11 minutes from the MBJ airport. Transportation is provided for an extra fee.
Half Moon is priced higher for its luxury amenities, so you can expect to spend $600 to $1,000 per night during peak season, depending on the accommodations you choose. The Eclipse section of the resort tends to be priced slightly higher compared to the Founder’s Cove area. The 5+ bedroom villas reach into the $4,000 - $6,000 range, and are suited for larger groups and longer stays.
Excursions in Jamaica
There are tons of things to do in Jamaica if you want to get away from your resort and experience the culture. The picturesque waterfalls, lush mountains, and historic landmarks provide a lot of landscape to explore. If you want something adrenaline-inducing, there are several places to try cliff jumping. If you want to try authentic Jamaican food, take a trip to Negril for a beachfront barbecue. Here are some of the top excursions that will make your trip unforgettable:
If you want to connect with nature during your trip, lounging on a raft and drifting down the Lethe River in Hanover would be perfect for you. This Bamboo Rafting & Limestone Massage Tour includes transportation from your Montego Bay resort. During the excursion, tour guides can answer all your questions about the island and provide fresh fruits as you float. After the raft ride, enjoy a foot massage with limestone mud, a gentle exfoliant that leaves your skin silky smooth. This tour requires a minimum of two people and starts at $99 per person. Expect to spend about 2 to 4 hours on this tour, including the 45-minute drive to the river.

A road trip to Negril is a great way to explore Jamaica’s west coast. Consider using one of your vacation days to take the Negril Beach & Rick’s Cafe Sunset Day Trip for a change of scenery. Stop for barbecue and drinks at Margaritaville before walking along 7-Mile Beach. Then head to the iconic Rick’s Cafe for some cliff jumping and live music. It’s the best place to watch the island sunset. The 6- to 7-hour excursion starts at $245 per person and includes transportation from your Montego Bay hotel. Make sure to pack snacks for the almost 2-hour drive from Montego Bay to Negril.
The Blue Hole, or Island Gully Falls, is another option for an all-day excursion. The Blue Hole Waterfall Experience includes a guided tour of the falls, caves and river. You can jump from the cliffs into the blue water or explore the surrounding rocky terrain before relaxing in a jacuzzi for a back massage. Make sure to bring water shoes for this journey. The excursion requires at least 3 people and starts at $143 per person. It includes transportation from most Montego Bay resorts.
Jamaica is a top Caribbean vacation destination known for its lively culture and turquoise waters, and if your goal is to unwind at a luxury, all-inclusive resort or explore the gorgeous landscape, Montego Bay is the best destination for you.
