London is one of those cities where there is always something to do. The experience you have can feel completely different depending on how you choose to spend your time.

Food lovers could spend an entire trip hopping between restaurants, markets and historic pubs. History buffs can fill their days exploring museums, exhibits and centuries-old landmarks. And for shoppers, Regent Street and Oxford Street are just the beginning. London is home to countless neighborhoods and shopping districts worth exploring.

But in a city with so much to see and do, don't forget to slow down.

You don't need to pack each day with every major attraction to experience the best of London. Sometimes, the most memorable moments come from lingering over a good breakfast, wandering through a quiet garden, or taking the scenic route to dinner.

If you're looking for a more relaxed way to explore the city, here's how to spend a slow day exploring London:

Morning: Breakfast Near Borough Market and St Dunstan in the East

Start your morning near Borough Market, one of the most popular food destinations in central London. It’s just a short walk from London Bridge Station.

Many of the Borough Market vendors open later in the morning, but there are still a few nearby spots where you can grab an early breakfast. Stop at Bread Ahead for coffee and something freshly baked before beginning your day of exploring.

After you finish breakfast, take a roughly 15-minute walk across London Bridge to St Dunstan in the East Church Garden.

Tucked away in the middle of the city, this former medieval church was heavily damaged during World War II and later transformed into a public garden. Now, the church's stone ruins are covered with greenery, creating one of the most peaceful and unexpected places to visit in central London.

Take your time wandering through the garden, snapping a few photos and enjoying a quiet moment before heading back into the city's busier streets.

Afternoon: The National Gallery, Trafalgar Square and Covent Garden

From St Dunstan in the East, take the underground toward The National Gallery.

You could easily spend an entire day inside one of London's many world-class museums, but this itinerary is all about experiencing the city without rushing from attraction to attraction. Give yourself an hour or two to wander through the exhibits and spend time with the artwork that interests you most.

Afterward, step outside to explore Trafalgar Square before you make your way toward Covent Garden.

When you're ready for lunch, head to Covent Garden or Seven Dials, two nearby areas filled with restaurants, cafés and food options for nearly every palate. If you don't have a specific restaurant in mind, this is a great opportunity to explore one of the area's food halls and choose whatever sounds good in the moment.

After lunch, walk off your meal with a stroll through Soho. Pop into a pub, stop for coffee, or simply wander through the neighborhood's busy streets.

If shopping is more your style, continue toward Regent Street, one of London's most famous shopping destinations.

Evening: Hyde Park, Fish and Chips and Drinks in West London

As the afternoon winds down, make your way toward Hyde Park for a slower evening in one of London's most iconic green spaces.

Spend some time exploring the park and visiting the Rose Garden before finding a quiet place to sit and enjoy the evening. If the timing works out, this can be a beautiful place to catch the sunset and take a break from London's crowds.

When you're ready for dinner, continue through the park toward Knightsbridge for a classic London meal at Mayfair Chippy. Order the fish and chips and enjoy before ending your day.

After dinner, stay in the Knightsbridge and South Kensington area for a nightcap. London has no shortage of historic pubs, and this is the perfect opportunity to choose one based on whatever catches your eye. A few options nearby include The Bunch of Grapes and The Hereford in South Kensington.

After drinks, take the Tube, a black cab, or an Uber back to your hotel and call it a night.

One Day in London Doesn't Have to Feel Rushed

With so many things to do in London, it can be tempting to pack your itinerary with attractions from morning until night. But one of the best ways to experience the city is to leave room for the unexpected.

Spend a little longer over breakfast. Wander down the street that wasn't on your itinerary. Stop inside the pub that catches your attention.

London will still be there.
